Thread: This is going to sound dumb but...

  1. 05-06-2008 02:44 AM #1
Is there a device, a light for example, that I can turn on and off manually when I'm on the phone at the office?

I have a corded headset for my office phone and more often than not, another person will walk into my office while I'm on the phone and just start talking to me, not knowing I'm listening to a client describe whatever it is they need.

I can't quite train them to ask me silently if I'm on the phone so I was thinking, is there some sort of light, indicator, battery powered or what not that I can push to indicate when I'm on the phone?

Perhaps something that can sit on top of my monitor that glows red or something?

The "I'm going to $@*!**%!! fire you if you say something obscene" death stare combined with arm waves only works if they make eye contact before talking. Loudly.

I'm tried several phrases to google but no real results.

Anyone have any ideas? Probably a shot in the dark but I figured I'd try.

Well you could always try this...

It's been working for DJs for decades. Or you could just clooooose your door? Stand up and pace so they can see you're on the phone? Throw a tennis ball at them?

I'd love to have one of those when Top Gear is on. Still haven't watched a single episode without interruptions.

At my work we have plantronics headsets, there is an aux. light that plugs in and flash's/blinks when I'm on a call. Doesn't work, I Still get interupted all the time.

Well I can't see how there could be a better suggestion. I think we're done here.

......first thing I thought of.... Get a wireless headset so you can just jump up and shut the door.

When people do this to me I
    1) say excuse me to the person I'm talking to
    2) cover the phone with my hand
    3) look at the person and say, 'dick, I'm on the phone'

Get yourself a church fan and write "busy" or "on the phone" and hold it up when someone walks in.

    Low tech and low cost.

Or eat a popsicle then glue a paper plate that reads "BUSY" to the end of the stick. Even cheaper. Or hell, use a stick broken off a small tree on your way into the office.

What are you doing nowadays, Peter? Hope everything's good.

I'm not clear on one thing: am I to write something on the stick or should I just use it to beat the person interrupting the phonecall?

This happens to me too - and I hate it. People think they are more important than the phone call - now, a lot of the time I put people on my speakerphone and stare at it, which tends to stop people disturbing me.

I'd like to get a 'Busy' sign, like the 'On Air' sign...

Just pick up one of those cheap tap lights. They are battery operated and can mount anywhere. If you want it to be red just change the bulb in it....
