Thread: Commissioning of George H. W. Bush CVN-77

  1. 01-10-2009 12:20 PM #1
Watching this on cable right now... pretty cool. Anybody else catch it? I guess this is the last Nimitz-class carrier. They just had a flyby of a TBM Avenger (the type Bush flew -- and was shot down in -- in WWII).

Cool stuff. I guess one of his old WWII buddies that he flew with is there to hang out with him during the ceremony.
Like his politics or not, anyone who has served the country in the military is something, and deserves respect and a thumbs-up.

That is freakin awesome. Is there a replacement planned for the Nimitz class?

They are massive. Over a hundred thousand tons if I'm not mistaken.

The replacement is going to be (I believe) the Gerald Ford class. Electro-magnetic catapults, more automation, improved electronics, an island that is placed even farther back than is currently, and a more advanced arresting system are among the improvements planned for the class. As far as I know though, the hull will be almost identical.

That is not a sonar bulb it a bulbous bow to help steady the ship.

I've had the pleasure of acutally walking around the ship while it was in dry dock. In the picture we walked down the stairs to the left, went all the way to the bow and then walked all the way to the props in the stern. We stopped about halfway and actually went UNDER the ship which is actually supported by wood. Some things don't change. The ship is just absolutely massive.

And correct CVN-78(USS Gerald Ford) is the next carrier which is already being worked on as we speak at Newport News.

I dont see any major differences in the flightdeck configuration other than the island being further back.
Is the G. Ford class longer/wider?
    Any other info?

Hey, they named an attack sub after Jimmy Carter (yes, really).

    Go figure.

At last! Now maybe the world will see my true greatness.
Finally I will have something named after me!
    Zoidberg!

Why not Gerald Ford? Besides, Ronald Reagan already has a carrier

I don't know. I mean, I know Ford was a naval aviator in WW2. But I think a lot of people don't really see him as a genuine President of the US. He was never elected and he wasn't President for very long.

AND, he lost the 1976 election to Jimmy Carter. That alone should disqualify him

I'm not certain that being a president is a requirement for having a ship named/classed in your honor.
After all, John (Johnny Reb) Stennis was just a senator. He got a Nimitz class.

Ha the carrier is designed for the 21st century but has an E-2 Hawkeye on the forward cat... The E-2 was introduced in the middle of the Vietnam war. That has to be the longest serving USN aircraft along with it's sister. the C-2 Grayhound COD.

There's nothing wrong with the Hawkeye. It's a proven aircraft, and the E-2D (first flown in 2007) has the latest avionics suite. It should be operational in 2011.

and the Jimmy Carter SSN is just funny. What's next? The USS William J. Clinton?

    i hope not...

I can understand a SSN being named for Clinton.
After all, what President knows more about the submarine races than him?

But did J. Carter ever serve in the military?
I'm too lazy to do a wiki search.

I don't have all the dimensions, but yes it is bigger than the Nimitz class ships along w/the island moved further back.

As for the Hawkeye's I've already seen the improved ones down at Va. Beach buzzing around.

To this day walking in the drydock was one of THE most coolest things I've done. Sometimes I like my job.

maybe a sub named after ol' Bill is a good idea. He was an advocate of launching Tomahawks at all the world's problems after all. Plus a sub nicknamed "Slick Willy" would be EPIC.

Nope. He resigned his commission (1953) before the Nautilus went to sea (1955). He was however, in reactor school and involved with the Seawolf program when he did leave the service.

That said he served in submarines and was qualified to command the diesel/electrics of the time.
