There was an entire boxed fenders thread at one point. I can't seem to find it now, though.

While looking for more box-flared cars, I learned that an AWD Mitsu Starion was being developed to compete with some of these greats, but didn't make it into homologation before GroupB was cancelled. I'm guessing the GroupB prototype, along with the boxed-flare heroes that came before it, inspired the later widebody production models with box flares.

      Epic update.
Thanks for that piece of history.

It would be cool to build a proper replica.
If you have a 5 cylinder, you don't need a stereo.

What is a Homologation car you ask?

...around that time the whole Bi-turbo cars had gotten pretty interesting. But still, I can't speak for dependability on these newer ones...we all know about that on the older ones though. Click & Clack used to dog them out often on their radio show back in the 90's.

I'll go really odd and old school on this revived thread. The Citroen BX 4TC Group B car. Car wasn't very developed when Group B was cancelled, and only ran three races. The race car was as weird as any Citroen, with hydropneumatic suspension, turbocharged Simca engine, a Citroen SM gearbox, and a solid all time AWD with no limited diff setup, and other anomalies.

They had to build 200 road going versions for homologation, only sold 62, and bought most of those back and destroyed them due to massive reliability issues.

Honestly, one of the weirdest stories of Group B.

The street version was pretty slick. There are VERY few in the wild.

And since it has recently broke cover after decades in storage, the Group S Audi. Was to be the successor of Group B, and Audi engineers worked on it in secret with no official sanction.

Can you imagine the homologation cars that would have emerged from that? Would have rivaled the legendary Sport Quattro for collectability. The Ford RS would have been in the same class, but they made enough (and couldn't sell them) so that they lived on in Rallycross for some time.

^ very interesting. I never knew Audi was planning a group s car. Sounds like they weren't, officially.

It would have been awesome to see it compete against the group s Lancia ECV

Yeah, I'm not sure if it would have lasted, considering 1000hp and the horrific crowd control they had back then. It was an accident that ended in fatalities that put an end to B as it was.

Considering that Audi, Lancia, Ford, and Toyota at least had cars in the works, and they were all sorta similar, who knows how far it would have pushed things.

Speaking of, the Toyota 222D Group B/Group S prototype is pretty damned amazing as well. Might have pushed the AW11 into the same legendary status as we speak about Quattro and Integrale.

Group B is weird, for as insanely popular as it was, most people are focused on one car....Quattro, and forget the Lancia 037, and the litany of other cars that competed, like the Toyota Celica.

Another forgotten one is the Porsche 961, which was the race version of the 959. Series was cancelled before the car got there. It later had some track time, but was underdeveloped for that purpose.

Ferrari also got into the game, it's ultimate try was the 288 GTO evoluzione.

The 308 was also used in Group B.

      Those illustrations are amazing.

And I see your Montreal, and raise you a Lamborghini Urraco "Bob".

Feruccio let test driver Bob Wallace work on a race car project, as long as he and the team did it on their own time. The result was the "Bob", and of course Feruccio liked it, but put the kibosh on any official racing project.
