      1988 Jeep/Mitsubishi CJ3B Thread

Someone asked if I would make a thread on this, so here you go. Sorry I haven't many photos, I will take more now that there is a thread.

To make a long story short, Mitsubishi bought the rights to build the CJ3B from Jeep. After American CJ3 production ended in the (50's? 60's?) Mitsubishi continued building their CJ, largely unchanged until 1998. They stopped in 1998 due to new safety regulations. This vehicle was intended solely for the Japanese market, though some examples have found their way to the US, Philippines, Indonesia, etc through importation. In Japan these were designated with "J**", depending on the generation. This 1988 is a J53.

I imported this from Japan, bought it from the original owner. It is in good condition, with 8/10 paintwork and some minor body rust. Weathered interior and bad tires. I've been fixing it up, though it didn't need anything serious and is a solid driver.

Here are the specs (as much as I know):

      Engine: 4DR5 turbodiesel 2.7L
      Power: 100 hp
      Torque: 160 lbs/ft
      Gearbox: 4 spd
      Axles: Dana 44
      Electrical: 24 volt
      0-60: ~10 seconds
Top speed: 60 mph (RPM limited)
      Approach angle: 47 degrees

You can ask questions but I really know very little about this Jeep so I can't say how good my answers will be.

      When I first got it:

Is it possible to flip-flop the steering and controls to convert it to LHD?

Yes, by swapping the tub for an American CJ tub.

That's cool. They used the jeep lettering too.
Do After market parts for US keeps fit your model?

(sheriff)Early, I though you said this was a drug possum.
(Early) Sure, I drug him from the ditch.
(sheriff) I wish you told me that before you sold him to me.

Well I guess that depends. Parts for the body and frame, sure. Those are identical to the US model. Engine parts obviously not since the engine is completely different.

Is the engine in anything that was available in the U.S.? If not then parts availability is going to be tough for that power train.

Are you planning mods for it? Are you considering a swap?

Parts are plentiful and easy to find, as the 4DR5 was used in the Mitsubishi Fuso cabover trucks. I can also easily get any parts I want from Japan.

I'm not sure what I would mod, if anything. Certainly I wouldn't do a swap. There really isn't a better engine than what it has that I could put in it.

Top speed 60? How is 50 then?

Sucks you can't drive it on the highway.

      Really cool otherwise.

It does 60 just fine, and it will go faster but then you're over revving it. I could re-gear it and it would do 70 just fine as there is plenty of power.

Will a Willys soft top fit, or, does it need to be modified?

Here are more pictures. The tires are being put on today so I took the opportunity to undercoat the frame body and wheel wells.

I put new hinges and chains on the tailgate, which was frozen up when I got it.
