Designing airflow shroud for stock SMIC

Hello,

- I have just recently bought a 20th anniversary edition GTI (imola yellow) with 190k as a project car and have completed all the issues that were at hand. It came with a K04 and K04 tune from APR as well as a magnaflow catback exhaust w/42DD downpipe...

- So far I have replaced the transmission, suspension bushings all around, new clutch, sub-frame bushings, headlights/tail lights, coil overs front/rear. (That may not be everything) and the car runs absolutely mint with an occasional over-boost, but hey its an old car...

- Now my next step is to design and manufacture a shroud that will more efficiently channel air into my stock side mount intercooler. I would need (from those that can help) some layouts or drawings which are roughly dimensioned of the stock side mount intercooler and the distance between the grille inlets and the intercooler itself.

Has anyone heard of this being done? if so, could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions!

Best regards

Mark C

I'm not aware of anything unless there was an Audi part to serve that function. I know the TTs had a different fender liner with vents in it to allow incoming air to flow out into the wheel well.

Stock car had a plastic air guide that hooked onto the intercooler.

Notice how there's little room behind the intercooler...

The stock intercooler could definitely do better than it does. All aluminum side mount off ebay is thicker and cools better. The stock guide may not fit without trimming because of increased depth (also no mounting as stock onto intercooler).

Check out this double side mount also. Eurospec used to offer one... with the Audi drivers side intercooler, connector pipe and the TT's 225 intake manifold. http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4171681-copying-the-TT225-twin-SMIC-idea-on-a-mk4

Same thing with the vented fender liners. Give the air someplace to go. On a side note, cars like the mk4 R32 and the TT using the 3.2l vr6 motor had a side radiator so you can also find those kind of brackets, etc, if you wanted to do an oil cooler or whatever. There's a ton of info out there.
