      Car for sister, with pics!

My sister is looking for a replacement for her '02 Jetta. It was bought new, and minor issues are becoming too frequent so its time for something else. She wants another compact car, just not another VW due to crappy dealer service while the car was under warranty...
This time around she wants a hatchback. We are going to look at the Civic, Cruze, and Mazda3 on Monday. Any other '17 models worth looking at? Car will be kept long term, so resale is not important. Also my father and I will do maintenance and out of warranty repairs.

Bonus points if you can name the car in the background.

      Mazda 3.

I have a skyactiv 6 that I've routinely beaten the piss out of for almost the past four years as my daily driver going in and out of DC. Almost 90k miles already and the only thing outside of regularly-scheduled maintenance I will be doing shortly is a barely leaky valve cover gasket. Over 31 mpg combined lifetime. They're proving to be pretty goddamn bulletproof, plus it's about as VW-like as you'll get in terms of driving dynamics (at least for older, more fun VWs) and ergonomics.

I'm definitely a convert to the brand, for daily driving duties at least. My only complaint is that I have yet to be able to identify a trim piece in the rear of the car that gets creaky when it's cold out, until the interior of the car warms up (only below 30 degrees). Other than that, no build quality issues of speak of either.

Add this to the mix - not as much power as the others but perfectly adequate and a couple grand cheaper.

She drove what is arguably one of the worst VW's ever produced in terms of reliability, an MK4 Jetta, for 15 years. She should buy a new Golf and go to another dealership.

It's probably from the plastic tabs that attach the headliner. Google for solutions.

      Hmmmm... No Focus?

Is the car to be an auto? That might rule out the Focus if you didn't want the Ford DSG equivalent. (Powershift?)

Also a good suggestion. Comes with a lot of features standard too, since it's the scion holdover.

Just curious, why a hatch? The new Hyundai Elantra are pretty nice looking and you can't beat the 100k miles warranty.

Might actually help to know approximately (30's-40's, 60's-70's) how old she is now since it is difficult to judge based on this photo. Otherwise it looks like a Cozy Coupe would fit her fine.

My first thought was a Toyota Starlet, but then I realized that it would have to have solid black bumper covers. I thought Roupin had a good guess.

That certainly does not look like a Mazda 3 in the background of that photo.

If it is, I will certainly buy you a Pizza, Cat.

I'm a fan of the Chevy Cruze, buddy's wife has one, it's been bulletproof so far. It's the LTZ trim and I've got to be honest, I find it's not a bad place to spend time.

GTI would be my sole contender, but I checked out the Elantra GT (with a stick and the value package) and quite liked it. Some good incentives too.

Civic or that Toyota hatch. Mazda3 if she hates the others.

I'd stay away from the Cruze, the resale values are terrible. You think it doesn't matter since keeping long term, but if you get into an accident it will.

Can't really go wrong with a Mazda 3.
