Saving the manuals: 2017 Civic Si sedan content

This post is a follow-up of sorts to a thread I posted a while back about whether to keep my Durango and supplement with another vehicle or to trade it on something newer.
      (Thread link: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...hat-comes-next)

After many, many hours of talking myself into and out of a half-dozen scenarios, I came down to a couple of very different options. One was to trade the Durango on a heavily-optioned 2017 GMC Sierra SLT crew cab 4x4. The other was to keep the Durango and buy a 2017 Honda Civic Si sedan as a 2nd car. OTD pricing for either option was within a $2k spread, but in the end I decided the truck didn't do much for me that the Durango doesn't already. I have an open 5x10 utility trailer in the garage that can carry more than a 5.5' truck bed ever could, and as much as my 8-year-old son hoped otherwise, I don't think I could bring myself to actually go off-road in a nearly $60k truck when it's my only vehicle and daily driver.

The Civic, OTOH, gives me something different entirely. I can use it for work travel and get reimbursed mileage instead of renting cars or piling more miles onto the Durango; I can use it for weekday commuting and carpool duty; and it puts another manual-transmission car into the garage before they're all gone. It's fuel-efficient, sporty enough for me, and offers a lot of value for the money. It's not the 340i M-sport sedan I might buy with 2-3x the budget, but it's also a heck of a lot cheaper to run and maintain.

So, yesterday I took delivery of a 2017 Civic Si sedan in Aegean Blue Pearl. They're still very thin on the ground around here, but I was fortunate enough to test-drive one a couple weeks ago and found it to meet my expectations. I talked to 4-5 different area dealers about pricing and availability, and most were unwilling to budge on price while also insisting on up to $2700 in mandatory add-on crap. However, one had this blue one in stock (their first), and they had it listed on their website at roughly $800 below sticker.

Long story short, a dozen emails and the dealer (located about 45-50 miles away) brought me the car and the paperwork and I took delivery in my driveway.

My impressions are scant at the moment - I haven't even been able to drive it yet because of various weekend commitments - but I'll have plenty of seat time this week, including a 6-hour round-trip drive on Tuesday. Looking forward to checking out the fuel economy especially, as the salesman averaged an indicated 44+ MPG (!!) between the dealership and my house at 70-ish MPH. I love the blue color, even if it is a bit more "in your face" than I should probably be riding around in as a 42-year-old professional. I did say recently that I wanted my next car to be a "color" and not just a shade of silver/gray/black/white, and this certainly delivers on that count.

Not sure I love the electronic parking brake, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. The clutch seems to have an unusually high engagement point, but again, I'll get used to it. The back-up camera is great, and I'm looking forward to trying out the Apple CarPlay system.

I'll try to update the thread in a few days with a better driving impression. In the meantime, a couple of pics (with my VERY excited 4-year-old showing it off):

Noice! Interior pics? And yes, electronic parking brakes are an abomination. I kind of want to mod my SS to a regular parking brake...

I'll take a few more pics and post later - can't get any good ones right now and didn't take any earlier. D'oh!

Yeah, I'll probably be removing those shortly. Didn't realize they'd been added till the car arrived...

Congrats! A friend of mine just got one and he said the same thing about the dealer forcing add-on crap unfortunately.

Otherwise great car, I drove his and think it's a perfect DD/Utility all around car that's fun to drive.

I'm really interested to see if there's any power left on the table from the new turbo engine that a tune will be able to get.

A friend just purchased one and this is what he was able to do on his in house dynapack in roughly ~1 hour. Boost changes only, otherwise stock map. There's room to go with VTC and ignition tuning. Usual "look at the gains not the absolute numbers" dyno caveats.

The blue is really nice, congrats. I'm warming to the idea of these. The Type R is still way too over the top rice for me tho.

That looks damn good! The power curve tho lol

I wonder if one of those piggyback or interceptor style chips would work in that case as well.

I saw an article the other day on a Hondata tune that finds a little extra in there:

Sadly, no. It does have a secondary control on the steering wheel, so hopefully that'll work well enough...

I'm actually enjoying the electronic parking brake in the SS after watching my Golf TDI drift forward into a parked car on a hill after apparently not setting the brake hard enough. yes, user error, but it has made me extremely paranoid.

congrats on the Si, OP. looking forward to some interior shots and driving impressions.

Protip: Even phone pics will be better if you park the car in the sunlight.

I like the blue. I too prefer to drive cars that are a color.

I saw my first Type-R in person this weekend at a Cars and Coffee. The design works a lot better in person than it does in the photos I've seen. It's still ricey, but not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

I feel that the Si got the short end of the stick with all of the Type-R news. I really do like the Civic Si, but it's going to be overshadowed.

Great pick up and I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the car, especially now that it's a turbocharged car.

Cars, like women, look better in person.

I said the CTR was going to have a ton of presence on the road, people laughed.

Congrats OP! That was fast. Very interested to see how you like it.

Nice purchase---I really like that color as well. I'm definitely in for some driving impressions after you have some time behind the wheel.

Of course, since some morons don't negotiate it off the price.

I drove one last week and came away really impressed. The only thing holding me back is that I've had 2 Si's in the past and buying another one would be cursing myself to an eternity of ownership.

But otherwise, the car does pretty much everything well. It's fast enough, sharp enough, and fun enough, yet seats 4 comfortably, gets 40 mpg on the highway, and has a pretty good stereo. Combined with the insane resale on Si's, it's basically a no lose car.

In other words, I'm jealous you got one of the early ones. You can enjoy it forever!

      GREAT pick up! Congrats!

I was hoping someone on here would buy one.

Keep us updated on the ownership experience!
