Thanks for some incredibly helpful info! Between this thread and the other one for model I.D., I'll definately have a better idea of what I'm looking at when I start looking at some e-30 325i's( which, if I read the info correctly, the engines should be the M-20??)![]()

Chapel- concerning the M-20 engine, what are the physical/internal differences between , lets say, the 2.5i vs the 2.7e ?? What makes the "i" in the "i" engine and the "e" in the "e" engine?? I'm looking at an '86 325 w/ the 2.7e motor. Thanks for any help.![]()

longer stroke, lower revs, different head, different cam. 2.7eta engines are the 'diesel alternative'
If you wanna know more, create a thread with exactly what you need to know (in the Engine Swaps forum) and Ill be more than glad to help you out![]()

As soon as I can figure out how to word, in as few words as possible, my questions about interchangability, I'll definately post a thread and take you up on your offer. Many thanks !!
Hey, Great work i love the pictures and the insightful information you have provided. I would like to suggest one thing.M52/M52TU - Straight 6 DOHC 24V with Single VANOS/Straight 6 DOHC 24V with Double VANOS. 1996-1999. Iron Block in US, Alloy Block in Europe. 118kg 260lbs (alloy) 140kg 308lbs
Used in E39 520i/523i/528i, E36 323i/328i, E38 728i, Variation of this was used in late US E36 M3.
2.0 (150bhp), 2.5 (170bhp), 2.8 (193bhp), 3.2 (240bhp) Sometimes referred to as S52US. Engine shares more common parts with M52 than Euro S52, but is a motorsport engine. You might want to add here that the Euro version E36 motors had 6 individual throttles, greater flowing cylinder ports.

I did
look at the S50 listing
S50 - Straight 6 DOHC 24V Solid Lifter Valvetrain with Single VANOS and Individual Throttle Bodies. (Dual Vanos on 3.2Ls) 1992-2000. 152kg 333lbs
Used in non-US E36 M3
3.0 (286bhp), 3.2L (321bhp)
there was no Euro S52.
S50 - Straight 6 DOHC 24V Solid Lifter Valvetrain with Single VANOS and Individual Throttle Bodies. (Dual Vanos on 3.2Ls) 1992-2000. 152kg 333lbs
Used in non-US E36 M3
3.0 (286bhp), 3.2L (321bhp)By euro version i meant the engine with higher hp and six throttle body as opposed to single. I didn't write euro version S52.

Might want to add that the ZcoupeM cars as of 2001 had the european spec (evo) motor with same components and performance.![]()

yeah, that was the S50
Europe only got two M engines.
The S50 and S54.
The S50B30 was originally just a 3.0L with 286bhp... then in 1996, they got the S50B32 evo engine, the 3.2L with 321bhp.
Then in 2001, they switched to the S54B32
but, yeah, I should add the euro Z3 M-coupe/roadsters
Here is some more information on the Z mcoupe. Turns out the US market S54 has 315hp due to a smaller exhaust and euro 321hp. Sorry for getting all technical.http://www.supercars.net/cars/....html
Peace.
