Thread: is it okay to pop zits on dogs ?

  1. 08-08-2003 11:18 AM #1
My old hound/terrier mix ----- had a bump on her back. So I squeezed it and it gushed out some nasty wuss. It was a huge zit. I have never seen such a big zit in my life. The more I squeezed it, the more stuff came out. Finally it stopped gushing and she was trying to bite me at this point anyway, but I got all the nasty krap out. Then I dabbed it with some peroxide and its on a spot that she cannot lick. Is that gonna form an absyss or something ? That was probably just a skin thing like we get too, right ? She is an old girl, like 12 years old or more even.

Might take it to the vet to make sure its not a bacterial infection on his back. My dog had one of those once and thats what it was.

My dog had one. I didn't know what it was and I took him to the vet.
the vet just reached over and without warning popped it and about 49 gallons of goo and wuss ran out. I seriously thought I was gonna puke. I just needed a warning or something.
She called it something wierd, and I must have looked confused, cause she then followed up by saying its like a dog zit. She didn't charge us, gave Yukon a doggie cookie and a quick once over and sent us on our way.

Just give the vet a quick call and verify.

I dont remember what Peanuts was called. I just remember that it was a bacterial thing where they had to drain it and shave his back. he was also on medication for a week or so. Poor doggie looked goofy with a big bald spot on his back!

I will keep an eye on her back. Thanks for the advice. She is okay I think, and it was popped on Wednesday night.

My Springer spaniel got one on her back, just a regular plook/zit, the same kind we get with infected hair follicles, I popped it for her (she squeaked a bit) and rubbed it with astringent to clean it and close the pore, which she liked of course. Kept an eye on it for a week, no problems.

Like any infection, if its caused by a foreign body, thorn, nail, barb wire fence, an abcess may form. Like human wound care, if you have a healing wound, dont go swimming in stinky swamps or non-moving bodies of water. However salt water (i.e. the sea) usually helps healing small cuts and abrasions.

hey guys, lay off the dog, there comes a time in a dogs life when his body starts to go through changes, his bark becomes a little lower, his actions a little more permiscuous, and his zits a little, well, more populous

It was probally an infected hair folicle... keep an eye on it... if it craters or inflames or basically does anything odd, take em to a vet...

I agree, talk to your vet.

Do you have another pet or a neighbor's pet that the dog may have been playing roughly with?

If so, you may also want to get an oral abtibiotic.

Our female cat had a huge abscess on the side of her face/neck from our large male cat ... um, "getting friendly" and biting her neck.

She was on the island on the kitchen, and I noticed it. I didn't know what this huge lump was. So, we took her to the vet.

The vet felt it, and said that there was a scab on it, so it was most likely just an abscess from a bite. He said, "this will be pretty disgusting," as he put a towel under it, flicked off the scab, and squeezed it out.

    Yuk!

I was amazed at what came out.

He gave us (for the cat, actually) an oral antibiotic, and we went home.

The vet said that you should see some of the bite and infections that pig farmers used to get years ago, when he first moved into the area. They would come in with giant abscesses on their hands/forearms.

hmmm...why am I reminded of the tetise fly?(however you spell it) Anyone catch that show on Fox a while back? It was on that show. It was on (or IN) a cow though, but looked like a big zit, but a fly larvea thingy popped out when squeezed.
