They didn't have to, the 335i and 328i would still have been enough for a checkmate in their respective categories vs. Audi.

In a chess game, checkmate is the end game for sure.... so good for them for a quick quip. But the R8 is a production Audi and BMW doesn't currently have a competitor. If they're going M to answer the billboard, going R to answer BMW's seems the next move no?

Eh, at some level these two cars can compete although the design of the R8 is far more exotic and will certainly win in the looks department but, both have equal hp.
I know the R8 is kind of esoteric in nature when compared with the commonality of the M3 but,....

| How many people here drive an R8? Quite a few have new M3s. Though so. |
I'm not exactly sure what the debate is, but what the heck... I'll beat a horse...
Current M3 is a different market than E46 and previous M3s. In the Audi lexicon, the M3 was a competitor to the S4 up until this generation. Then the M3 went to price and performance to match the RS 4 and that's a different league... again in the Audi lexicon. That'd be RS 4 and upcoming RS 5. So it's more attainable than R8 true... but what does that say?
The ad across the street (responded to) is for the A4. Base A4 sedan starts at $31,000 while the base M3 coupe sells for $57,850. So the logic is that if BMW pulled out the big gun to make 'Check Mate', Audi has a bigger gun so long as we're... (ahem)... gun measuring.
BTW, for reference of further measuring, the base 3-series starts at $33,600.

It depends how you look at it. An F1 car couldn't win Le Mans, it would break before 24h. A Le Mans car couldn't win an F1 race either. Well, BMW has enough problems winning in F1, they should probably just stick to that.

I don't follow this method of thinking at all. BMW hasn't been all that competitive in F1. If simply having a team is bragging rights, then I guess they win... but I don't buy into that. Now Mercedes is a more impressive run in that sport, having achieved dominance in roughly the same time.
Audi on the other hand tends to stick to sports where they can run more technology that applies their road cars. Rally (quattro), Touring Car (quattro, sequential gearboxes), Sportscar (FSI, TDI). And, they also tend to dominate the heck out of wherever they go.
Winning so many time at Le Mans and in such a short time period is a major achievement. This year they're shooting for Ferrari's record of wins... only Porsche has more at Le Mans. And, trust me on this, winning at Le Mans is not a simple task. Peugeot had a faster car last year and more F1 drivers than you can shake a stick at and they still lost.
Just because F1 is more expensive IMHO doesn't make it the be all end all of bragging rights. And if it is, Mercedes owns BMW.
Honestly, I'd love to see BMW and Audi go head-to-head in the same sport. Le Mans in 1999 was such a race and, to their credit, BMW won that. Of course, Audi was in a very early stage of their program, but that's where you can compare apples and apples... head-to-head. Remember the BTCC? Audi dominated that before quattro was ruled an unfair advantage, so it's a give and take. Unfortunatley, neither tend to go near each other anymore.

| I think the pissing contest here is between speed, not racing wins. F1 car > LeMans car...argue that if you want
|
Well if it's speed the R8 V10 wins. If it's racing, then BMW has a considerable history but that doesn't mean F1 is the bees knees. F1 is driven heavily by who has the biggest budget or has done the most/best investment in aero. As an investment, it's awful and awfully expensive.
I think if you're going to be so adamant that everyone must agree with you that F1 is it then it's probably not worth arguing, but there are very valid arguments to being strong in various sorts of racing. Rally has its merits (both WRC and events like Paris to Dakar), endurance has its merits, etc. You see F1 as being most superior... That's fine. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I think you need to come to a realization. Not everyone has the same criteria as you.
Me, I prefer series that push new technology and races that can't be determined by a single pit mistake and the like. 24 hour and 12 hour races do this. I also like series where many manufacturers can and do race... so kudos to BMW North America for jumping in on GT2 with the M3. It's not exactly pinnacle within sportscar racing, but it'll pit them against Corvette, Aston Martin, Ferrari and Porsche and that's some serious competition.

You know what, it may sound ridiculous but washing your car in the rain is one of the best time to wash it.
I use to do this back in the days, when it started raining I would run out and wash my car. People would drive by looking at me like I was crazy, gave it a quick rinse and let it sit. The next day when the sun comes out, the car dries amazingly spotless. Threw on a coat of spray wax and the car looks new.

Embarrassment? I know the brands are not in direct competition, but please do tell me how that would be an embarrassment for me. Oh, and try to do so without resorting to badge snobbery... |
Ok, i'm pretty tolerant but even I can't stand your posts now. That's just lacking any real relevance to this thread and a blatant excuse to over-do your domestic leg humping.
Give it a rest already. You're like Ned Flanders trying to convert everyone to Christianity. NOBODY CARES!
I have nothing against Domestics (other than my personal experience with their qulaity in the last oh 10 years has been less than favourable through several vehicles.) And i'm not a badge whore. But EVERY post of yours, even if the thread doesn't have a thing to do with Domestics is somehow seen as an opportunity to promote them. Get over it already.
And please, don't turn this into another Domestic vs. The World thread. PLEASE!

I apologize for the unparalleled atrocities I have committed against humanity as a whole. You may now persecute the other evildoer who had the audacity to mercilessly post a fake billboard containing a CADILLAC in this thread!

You know, his post didn't bother me at all. It was the moment my eyes moved left and saw DenCo.
That's when it pissed me off, does that tell you anything?
You're more annoying than Hawc...

Seriously, there's nothing wrong with being a GM fanboy, but you're like a broken record. All you ever do is praise GM. Its getting old

Because it has nothing to do with anything. Cadillac is a competitor, Buick is not. Therefore, you are either too stupid to get the joke, or you're just being your regular GM-leghumping self.
Either way, its embarrassing. I hope I didn't resort to "badge snobbery"

It's not like I went completely off-topic: I kept with the theme of the thread. It's also not like I did anything inflammatory: I bashed nothing/nobody and didn't do or say anything that went out of line. I merely went and made my own little JOKE billboard thing, like many others have in this/these thread(s) and did so using another luxury brand, to boot... I could maybe understand if I posted a freaking Sonata or G6 something, but WTF is so wrong with the post that I made. And it's not like there's much OBJECTIVE difference between an A4, a NON-M 3-Series and the NEW LaCrosse, aside from the obvious price difference... but it's not like an economy car vs. a pair of supercars or anything.
Grow-up and/or learn to cope with the fact that people WILL have different views from yours and that they have just as much of a right to speak, post, EXIST, etc. as you do.

Anyway... back on topic... BMW won. Audi could have done so much more with the R8 billboard. And the BMW dealer took theirs down anyway so Audi is talking to itself.

The image you see here was passed to us today by a friend and reader in the Toronto area. We're not sure if it's photoshopped (their are some indicators on the Audi Q5 billboard like the shading to the right), but the GLK ad above the VW dealership looks completely real.
If anyone lives near the dealership (name begins with York) and can verify the presence of the ads, let us know.
You may recall the original ad war from Santa Monica between Audi and BMW last week. Our Car Lounge topic on the subject can be found via the link below.

I may find myself in Toronto this weekend. If you have any better details on the location that'd help though. Being that "York" is a fairly common thing in the Toronto area (North York) and doesn't narrow things down very much.

Lol.
I did see a new GLK and it looks so old. It should have debuted like 10 years ago.

Thats the Yorkdale VW dealer in Toronto. I drive close by there a few times a week, ill go up the road next time and see if its real.
Although looking at it for a few minutes it does look like a pshop
