The owner's name is Frank Selldorff - he also owns the black F1 road car (#007) in the final two photos. Apparently he's the owner of one more McLaren F1 road car as well - a silver one (#068). Somewhat larger versions of all these photos can be found at this link: http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4289506777 More photos of #007 can be found here: http://www.turnermotorsport.co...shtml Enjoy the pics! >8^) ER

US legal? Didn't you guys need to install those extremely ugly front bumper pieces under the headlights for it to be legal?

That is truely amazing. There is nothing I dislike about that car. Mmm possibly the rear, which just drops off- no lines of any sort, but it's ok. Isn't that the only color the LM came in? I one day hope to own three McLarens.

Unfortunately, the car is nowhere near me. It's kept in Massachusetts with it's owner. Hopefully I'll be able to arrange to see it sometime this year though. Reflex- Those ugly bumpers were just a trick that Amerispec Corp pulled to bring in 7 F1's in the mid '90s. Once in the country, all the cars were converted back to stock. The whole process was quite a stretch of the current rules at that time, and eventually the DOT closed the loop holes and ordered Amerispec Corp to stop. The seven cars that made it in as Ameritech F1's were allowed to stay though and their owners have been free to register and drive the cars as much as they want. In 1999 the DOT passed a new law called "Show&Display" which allows for significant automobiles to be imported after approval by them. The McLaren F1 is one of the cars on the approved list. Previously though, post 1994 cars weren't elligible due to the EPA's requirement that the cars still meet the emissions standard for their year of manufacture. 1995 and later cars were required to have OBD-II diagnostic equipment fitted and no one was going to spend the money to develop it for a handful of F1's. Something has changed at the beginning of this year though, and now all years of McLaren F1's (1993-1998) are elligible for importation under Show&Display. One downside of Show&Display is that the car can only be driven 2500 miles per year. The limit was originally going to be 500, but was increased due to lobbying from several wealthy collectors who were counting on Show&Display to give them access to their previously unobtainable toys. The law is commonly referred to as the 'Bill Gates' law - referencing his efforts to get a Porsche 959 certified for US roads. He most certainly had a lot to do with Show&Display being passed. Those 7 F1's that came in through Amerispec Corp prior to Show&Display were supposed to submit the paperwork for inclusion in that regulation, but only one owner began the process (Ralph Lauren - he owns two Ameritech F1's) and none have completed the process. I guess the government has more important things to do than chase down these owners. Personally, if I was an owner I would fight it because of the usage limitation that would be imposed. >8^) ER

Well there has been some debate on that issue following the release of "Driving Ambition - The Official Inside Story of the McLaren F1" a book that was put out about 2 or 3 yrs ago. The book includes a poster which says that 'LM1' & 'LM4' were both originally finished "Black w/graphics". Now I've never seen a black LM to prove this, and generally, most places say that all LM's were finished in Historic Orange (aka Paypaya Orange). You would think that the official book put out with great involvement from McLaren Cars would have all the facts straight, but this part remains a mystery. There are quite a few F1 road cars that have been converted with what the factory calls the High Downforce LM-Kit and those cars are many different colors including silver and blue. There are also some F1 GTRs that have been given the orange paint treatment, making them appear to be true LM's. It's pretty easy to spot the impersonators though. >8^) ER

That's not true at all... The F1 LM is the comemorative 'road version' of the '95 LeMans winning F1 GTR - so maybe that is what has your story a bit twisted. There are F1 GTRs that have also been converted for road use following their useful lives as competitive race cars. Here's one such GTR being offered for sale currently in England by Ray Bellm - a former F1 GTR race car driver. This is GTR #16R - a former '96-spec FINA BMW Motorsport GTR:

The small on-board tool kit is made of titanium, and while many of it's tools are golden in color, I don't believe that they are actually plated with gold. There is real gold foil that lines the engine bay and engine covers and various other bits of the car to deflect the enormous heat from the engine, but I'm nearly positive that the tool kit isn't real gold. >8^) ER

The LM isn't actually the most exclusive form of the F1. That title is reserved for the F1 GT, or long tail road car. They built just three of them including the prototype. One is in the hands of a Japanese collector who also owns an LM, the other customer car is currently unaccounted for, and the prototype remains at the McLaren Cars factory tucked away in the corner under a tarp.I will agree that this is the ultimate interpretation of the McLaren F1 though, and if I could have only one - this would be my choice - no doubt! BTW: I don't mean to look like such a 'know-it-all' - honest!! I do like people to have the most factual information possible though. There's a lot of half-truths and false info that circulates about these cars and I like to get the real story out there as best I can. I'm not trying to make anyone look dumb by doing it. >8^) ER
