Yet another "what should i buy?" thread. Mature pocket rocket edition!

      EVs not invited, sorry.

So, I am on the hunt for a pocket-rocket that will replace my vulnerable BMW X3 (2wd). My pricing is $50K, and I have it narrowed down to these three:

      2020 BMW X2 M35i

      Pros
      1) Most powerful four banger BMW makes
      2) Immediate power from all power band, hardly any turbo lag
      3) Quick shifting automatic transmission
      4) Good build quality
      5) Quick and composed handling
      6) Compact dimensions for ninja moves
      7) Great exhaust notes

      Cons
      1) Kinda smallish interior
      2) Very small rear window-Can't see sh*t out back
      3) Very stiff ride even with standard 19" rims, forget the 20"
      4) No blind spot detection available
      5) Not really a BMW, but Mini dressed as a BMW
      6) Front-biased AWD means slight understeer
      7) Wanna be M car...I counted no less than 8 M badges on the car

      2020 Subaru WRX STI

      Pros
      1) Blisteringly fast
      2) Slick manuel transmission
      3) Big windows and great views all the way around
      4) Tenacious handling
      5) Value proposition is better than the bimmer

      Cons
      1) Even worse ride than the X2 M35i
      2) No available front collision mitigation and other safety tech
      3) Gigantic rear wings that's borderline ridiculous
      4) Insurance is hilariously expensive even for 'mature' drivers like me
      5) Not bad build quality for the price, but could be so much better
      6) Dealers are too proud of them, discounts are hard to come by due to thin inventory

      2020 BMW M235i sedan

      Pros
      1) Most powerful four banger BMW makes
      2) Engine makes good power, available throughout any rpm
      3) Large windows mean visibility is not a problem, standard blind spot detection
      4) Handsome and modern interior
      5) Composed and confident handling
      6) Even more focused than the X2 M35i
      7) Same engine, but M235i seems quicker than X2 M35i
      8) Cheaper than its sibling, X2 M35i. Better looking too (imho)

      Cons
      1) Smallish rear seat
      2) Very stiff ride even with standard 19" rims, forget the 20"
      3) Not really a BMW, but Mini dressed as a BMW
      4) Front-biased AWD means understeer merges its ugly head from time to time
      5) Modern interior means lotsa Tonka plastic parts throughout the cabin

So TCL, which one of these pocket rockets will quench your midlife crisis thirst? Did I forget anything?

STI without a question. What about a CTR or Golf R?

The 2 series Gran Coupe is hideous and the X2 is not worth the $$ IMO.

Both good options, but Uber actually had an S3 in his fleet as of a few months ago.

The STI is the only one remotely interesting in your list IMO. You already have an E-Tron as a daily driven luxury CUV.

I'm gonna trade it in. I love the S3, but it's just sitting in garage now that I'm working remotely.

I looked at RS3, but there's no discounts on them. Otherwise, that would've been my first choice.

I love the STI too. But dealers aren't just dealin' on them.

Of the three choices presented, STI is clearly going to be TCL favorite because manual. But it's really old and insurance is kind of insane.

The two BMW choices are identical... just hatchback vs. sedan. The 2 series' weird proportion is largely due to the fact that is is a X2 with trunk as oppose to an actual sedan. So go with the original hatchback design that is actually not bad looking instead of that ugly blob.

Aren't the new 2 series based on transverse FWD? I can't possibly imagine paying such a steep price for something like that. STi, easiest decision ever.

I wish I was. But local dealers wanted something like $1,100 a month for a lease. That's what I pay for both S3 and X3.

Golf R or CTR are my suggestions as well. The choices you provided are not exciting.

Here's the funny thing about that. I actually blasted that X2 was a joke. I called it "Overpriced attempt to SUC (Sport Utility Coupe)". Now I'm looking at one. Talkin' bout foot in my mouth lol:

      https://forums.vwvortex.com/showthre...tility-Coupe):

But when I test drove the M35i version of the X2, I was pleasantly surprised. It was well planted, quick, and tenacious grip (though STI is better) around the bends.
Plus the fact that BMW is giving thousands off on the sticker, while STI is going for full sticker, is just icing on the cake.

Plus I'm not sure if I could afford insurance on them. It was going to cost $120 more a month for the insurance on STI.

No Golf R around my area, though. There are a few CTRs around, so I'm gonna go look at one.

Looks like the dealerships are all suffering from low-inventory. Good news is, they are giving top-dollar for used cars right now.

If BMW just called X2 a different name.... like M140i, it would be an instant TCL darling. It is a fundamentally a well sorted hot hatch with slight suspension lift.

I saw a new 2 series sedan on the street a few weeks ago. It was in that bright blue. It honestly, truly, looked like a Kia which isn't fair because even Kias are looking more composed these days. X2 is no because it's an X1 with even less cargo capacity which isn't much to begin with. Subaru is a respectable fun car and would be something different for you so go with that.

You call the STI blindingly quick, but I believe both BMWs are faster.

A guy at work got one of those X2 M35i and it is a sweet little car, that would be my vote(and I normally hate BMWs)

What? Why are shopping for mature pocket rockets if you have one in the garage that you're not driving? I'm super confused.

Yet another "what should i buy?" thread. Mature pocket rocket edition!

Golf R or CPO RS3 (not if you only want to lease though).

There is no way I’d buy/lease one of the FWD based BMW’s they are simply terrible for the money.

What about a Model 3? Or G70 3.3T? Not exactly pocket rockets, but I don’t really consider the X2 one either.

      no discounts on the RS3?

Plus take another $2k off for loyaly on 2019s ... and $1k off on 2020s. YOu haven't asked the right questions, you can get $10k off MSRP with ease.

IMHO, if its going to sit, it'll depreciate the slowest out of all of the cars you've mentioned. Get something that won't tank in value ...
