So many great mentions already, would be impossible to choose just one. I think some are very much linked to our childhood impressions etc.

One of my neighbours had a BMW 635csi with a local exhaust system but it sounded amazing, he also had a Mazda B3000, I think these might have been a South African special model that came from the factory with the Ford Essex 3L V6, again he had some exhaust system but those sounds have stuck with me.

The Yamaha V6 Taurus SHO. Yes, still.

This vid has been floating around on the internet for a while, and pretty accurately conveys what it sounds like inside when the secondaries open up.

It still raises every hair on the back of my neck:

An URS4/S6 is $3-5k for meh condition, but still has the sound. Even more attainable.

I'm gonna throw another Yamaha motor in the mix. Not the BEST by any means but for an affordable unusual V8, the 2005-2011 Volvo V8 XC90/S80. Sounds very nice with a muffler/resonator delete.

I used to have a 2007 XC90 V8 Sport for a work vehicle before my current XC60. Passion Red of course. Top 5 favorite cars I've ever had.

An even more accessible car is anything with the VW 2.5L inline 5, so that pretty much covers a lot of Jettas, Golfs, and Passats.
Factory mufflers give it a hint of that V10 note, but an aftermarket exhaust is a must. I still find myself browsing Craigslist for that rare Passat 2.5L with a manual (honestly I'd even take an automatic) because the engine sound is sooo cool from such a commonplace car.

As I'm on my 3rd VR6 powered car, but on the tail end of my 30s, I can't get out of my head the ridiculously fun gurgly wookiee roar of straight piped VRs I've had the pleasure of driving in my past, but can't subject myself to that level of volume, but would love to recapture the tone and gurgle.

The 2.5l VW inline 5 has already been mentioned above but no videos yet. Here’s one MK6 2.5 straight piped.

There is literally NOTHING that compares against BMW's M88 engine in full song, especially when it's mounted in a M1 Procar.

I've seen a few of these live at the Nürburgring and Spa and even when there's 30 other cars on track you can pick out the M1s blind.

The engine doesn't necessarily have to be in an M1 though. In a M635 it sounds equally glorious.

I've seen a lot of different classic racecars at Spa and the 'ring - Group A, Porsche 917s, Can Ams, vintage F1, hell, even Group C. Still nothing holds a candle to the pure fury of the M88.

The thread title typo actually reminded me... the Honda Beat with its turbo I3 has a baby I6 sound, but... different!

Other cool cars with cool sounding I3’s, especially with an exhaust: Suzuki Cappuccino, Ford Fiesta and Focus 1.0L, anything with the BMW B38.

There are so many nice sounding engines that it would be hard to pick the beat one.

But this is the beat one I have ever owned.
      Completely stock exhaust too.

I dunno, man. That's terribly raspy and doesn't sound good at all to me. When I owned a Mk5 2.5 I remember there were good sounding exhausts for it, but straight pipe isn't it for sure.

for me - best street car (that i've heard - besides the lfa)

best race car (that i've heard - besides v10 f1)

Seeing monster tajima at ppihc ! terrible sound/video quality but this was a life changing experience for me as a young man !

Fond memories of the announcer saying up next is Monster tajima! then everyone went silent...you could hear the turbo noises, sequential trans almost from the start line - we were at glen clove - roughly half way up the mountain. I remember everyone cheering and going nuts as he roared past, dirt plumes in his wake... Great times !

Here is a better video/sound quality of one his suzuki sx4 from 10 yrs ago - still the video doesn't do it justice at all(unfortunately).

Actually, if you don't straight pipe the **** out of them with awful tin can mufflers they can sound decent. A set of quality high flow cats and quality mufflers they sound great.

Surprised no one has mentioned the E30 M3. I love the intake noise.

I really love the audi 5 cylinder, but this hasn't been posted (the OS Giken 240, not just 240s):

Yeah it's a bit trumpet-y at high revs. This one here is a Mk6 Golf with just the rear muffler deleted and it sounds a lot better, although he doesn't rev it as high.

Even the F-Type V6 sounds goddam amazing. Much more reasonably priced too.

Hoping to win this thread when the naturally aspirated RB28 Z31 is done soon
Everything I own is for sale for the right price. If you really want any of the cars I post about, shoot me a PM.
